Young Man
Saint Joseph with Infant Jesus (1635) by Guido Reni
Listen up, gather near.
There’ll come a time
When I’m not here.
Settle down, not too much.
You’re a boy
You’re meant to rush.
Look ahead, never down
That’s the best way
To keep your crown.
Take a breath, take a bite.
Give all the rest
To the purse that’s light.
Young man, look at the sky,
Watch the night fight the stars.
Young man, look in my eyes
Live a story worth the scars.
Lend a hand, maybe two.
A sword’s an anchor
If it’s all for you.
Never quit, never yield.
To God alone
Your will is sealed.
Find the truth, find your tongue.
There’s a strength
That’s forever young.
Learn first to cry, and then to not.
There’ll come a time
When your eye’s forgot.
Young man, look at the sky,
Watch the night fight the stars.
Young man, look in my eyes
Live a story worth the scars.
Dedication: To Hugo, my young man
