Scrawny Jonny

Alone (1887) by Heinrich Vosberg

The town around is crying

Black clad and sighing,

For scrawny Jonny lying

At the bottom of the lake.

The June moon was covered

Not a sound around was heard

When Jon gone discovered

That Anne was at his window.

Lil’ Anne ran with him

Past downtown to swim

At Blake Lake’s rim

Where they could be alone.

Bare and fair they flew

Wet with sweat into

The love of lovers new

Upon the sandy beach.

When the splendid ended he said

By May they’d be wed,

And with glee he tread

Awaiting her happy nods.

The longer none were given

The deeper he’d be driven

Until her will would give in

But it never did.
