Dear Mary

The Coronation of the Virgin (1635–1636) by Diego Velázquez

O’ Mary, Mother of God,

What shall I make of you?

Icon, yes, and for that laud,

But also a humble Jew.

O’ Blessed Among Women,

Chosen before all time,

Do you extend a spotless hand

To mine with day’s begrime?

O’ Favored One,

Will you have my prayer

Or, blushing, from me run

And that for my welfare?

O’ Virgin of Virgins,

How you confound me so;

If my Mother you have always been

Then please do let me know.
