Make War

The Battle of Alexander at Issus (1529) by Albrecht Altdorfer
I’ve read books and heard tell
Of times when men rose and fell
Beside piles of ash and iron
Outside the gates of Hell.
How was it to have felt?
How was it to have knelt
On the neck of evil,
Death swiftly dealt?
We have become the play things
Of countless play things.
With bread in our bellies
We clip our own wings.
Make war with the devil.
Make war on some hill.
Make war with yourself.
Make war, or they will.
